Streams in the Desert by Mrs. Charles E. Cowman

In my previous post, I quoted a passage from Streams in the Desert.  After the Bible, this timeless classic is the book I recommend most for hurting people who are going through difficult trials.

My mother-in-law was always talking about how her Streams in the Desert was exactly what she needed for the day.  Over time, after she kept mentioning it, I finally asked her “What is your Streams in the Desert?”  She said it was a daily devotional.  Then she gave me one for Christmas 2001!  I don’t know if I would have ever bought one for myself but I am so, so thankful that she gave one to me.  It always seemed to help me on my most difficult days and still does!

The book was compiled by Mrs. Charles E. Cowman.  According to the publisher, Zondervan Publishing House, “In 1925 the first edition Streams in the Desert was released.  In it were thoughts, quotations, spiritual inspiration which had helped to sustain Mrs. Charles E. Cowman during her years of missionary work in Japan and China- particularly the six years she nursed her husband while he was dying.  After two years and three thousand books in print, it was suggested to Mrs. Cowman that since all her friends had copies, there was probably no need to print anymore.  For the readers of more than two million copies now in print, Streams in the Desert is more than a book – it is a living word of confidence and assurance, God’s message for the day.”

You may be able to find the book in your local Christian bookstore.  I even have a special 1969 58th edition I found at Goodwill.  My favorite edition can be currently found at Amazon.com in the leather-like journal format with space for journaling on each page.  I have enjoyed reading my entries year after year, so I can reflect and be reminded how the Lord spoke to me through it.  I wholeheartedly recommend this book.
