In the previous post, I described the circumstances in my life that I allowed to rob me of my joy. My actions revealed I was really looking for happiness – if I get pregnant, then I’ll be happy. Happiness has more to do with circumstances or “happenings”; things that take place that make us happy. Happiness is shallower than joy, which is deep-seated and spiritual. True joy may not always produce a smile, but it allows God’s purposes to be fulfilled in our lives.

I am sure I cried with each new announcement. How can this be fair? In my mind, they jumped ahead of me. Some hadn’t been married as long or been trying as long as we had to get pregnant. Some probably even got pregnant the first month they tried. I didn’t know any of this for sure; it’s just how I was thinking.

The matriarchs of the Christian faith, the wives of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, were all barren. That amazes me. It’s encouraging that the Bible tells us of their barrenness so that we can identify with them. God also opened their wombs. It has given me hope.

What God wanted me to learn and what He used to encourage me, I want to share with others who are experiencing the same pain. The joy of this trial – the end result – wasn’t just to have a baby. God wanted me to have joy in spite of not having my heart’s desire – to have a baby of my own. The joy has been in my journey.
